Royalty-Free Photos

What are "Royalty-Free" photos?
Each stock photo in the Index Open collection is offered as a Royalty Free Photo. When you license a Royalty-Free photo, you pay a one-time fee for an image. You can then use the image for different projects for an unlimited time period. You cannot sell a royalty free photo to someone else. You can include a royalty free stock photo as part of a product like the cover of a CD, graphics in software, etc. On Index Open, you pay one subscription fee for the right to use any of the photos on a Royalty Free basis.

The majority of the millions of stock photos in our larger image library at www.photolibrary.com are “Rights Managed.” This means that you license the right to use the stock photo for a specific use for a defined time period (which is usually one year). For example, you purchase a license for a stock photo to be used in a brochure, quarter page in size, print run of 50,000 for one year. If you then need a different use, you will also need an additional license. Again these restrictions do not apply when you purchase an Index Open subscription.

Why are some stock photos Royalty Free photos and others are not?
It is the artist who decides whether the photo or illustration will be offered as Royalty Free. When an artist has decided which type of license to offer, we price licenses for the photo or illustration accordingly. At Index Open, all available photos are Royalty Free. On the other hand, at Index Stock Imagery, most of our stock photos are Rights Managed but we do have a collection of Royalty Free photos as well (which include the Index Open photos). The important thing for you is to find the right stock photo that meets your needs.
